Morse code memory

Turn two cards, listen, remember. The sound version is the real exercise - anyone who can do it recognizes characters by ear.

Memory is a game about recall, and Morse code is learned through recall - the two fit together better than it first sounds. What matters is which version you pick.

Character and code shows both sides written. It helps when you first meet the alphabet, but it has a weakness: it trains you to read dots and dashes, and that is exactly what you never need later. Nothing arrives in writing on the air.

Sound and character is the one that counts. One card sounds, the other shows the letter. To find a pair you have to hold the tone, not the picture - and that is the same feat a radio contact demands.

Why an open card plays again

A face-up sound card can be tapped and plays once more. That is deliberate. If you hear a tone exactly once and then have to find it somewhere on the board, you are not playing a memory game, you are gambling. With the repeat, the task stays what it should be - remembering where something was, not guessing what it was.

Q codes without sound

The third version pairs Q codes with their meaning, and does so without sound. That is not an oversight: QRL, QSB or QTH are not learned by ear but as vocabulary. Knowing them lets you follow a QSO even when individual characters are lost - three letters replace a whole sentence, and the order in a contact is always the same.

The full list is under Q codes; only the common ones are in the game.

Frequently asked questions

  • When is the sound version worth it?

As soon as you hear a handful of characters reliably - roughly after the first week with the Koch trainer. Before that it is eight unfamiliar noises, and the game becomes a test of patience rather than an exercise.

  • Which speed is right?

The one you practice at otherwise, usually 18 to 20 WPM. Slowing down does not make it easier; it builds a counting habit you have to shed later. Why that is so is explained under timing and speed.

  • Are results saved?

No. The game runs in the browser, there is no leaderboard and nothing is sent. If you want to measure yourself, that is what the daily challenge is for.
